History of Lakshadweep

The history of lakshadweep is known from the 7th century where references are made in pallava inscription by which lakshadweep is known as dveepa laksham a part of the pallava dynasty. From then on Cheraman Perumal,
Portuguese, British wrested control over lakshadweep. It is said that during the later part of Cheraman Perumal who got converted to Islam, Islam had flourished in these islands.

In 1956, though the majority of the people of lakshadweep were malayalis, India formed these islands as a seperate Union territory and in 1973 named as lashadweep.
